"Limbo" is a remake of a tune recorded in Hollywood on May 9. This version -- with Carter replacing Buster Williams -- has a much looser and more relaxed feel to it, but the solos, especially Davis', are more focused.

"Vonetta" is listed as "Venetta" on the track sheet for this session, and the issued version (take 12) is the only complete take.

This is the first of several New York studio sessions during May-July 1967. These sessions allowed the Quintet to develop new repertoire centered around original compositions. Only a few of these tunes -- e.g. "Masqualero," "Nefertiti," and "Riot" -- became staples of the Quintet's live performances, however.

After returning from the west coast in mid-May, the Quintet was booked at the Village Vanguard (June 2-4), then went to the Village Gate (July 4-16 opposite Dizzy Gillespie, and August 15-27 opposite Ornette Coleman). They also played at The Watts Summer Festival, held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, on August 21-22.
