"Masqualero" remained in the live book until 1970, although Davis dropped the tune
soon after Shorter left in March 1970. (The only post-Shorter performance I know
of is from the Fillmore West in
April 1970.)
Hancock and Carter recorded "The Sorcerer," along with "Riot" and "Speak Like a
Child," for Hancock's album Speak Like a Child in March 1968.
This is the second of several New York studio sessions during May-July 1967. These
sessions allowed the Quintet to develop new repertoire centered around original
compositions. Only a few of these tunes -- "Masqualero," "Nefertiti," and "Riot"
-- became staples of the Quintet's live performances, however.
After returning from the west coast in mid-May, the Quintet was booked at the Village
Vanguard (June 2-4), then went to the Village Gate (July 4-16 opposite Dizzy Gillespie,
and August 15-27 opposite Ornette Coleman). They also played at The Watts Summer
Festival, held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, on August 21-22.
